– New 2017 Kawasaki Z125 VS Honda Grom 125cc Mini Bike Horsepower Comparison –
When comparing the Honda Grom versus Kawasaki Z125 – which one makes more horsepower? That is one of the biggest questions next to ‘which one is faster?’ etc. Up until recently, all we have been able to compare when it comes to performance numbers were the RHP / TQ ratings released by the manufacturers. The figures that Honda and Kawasaki release for these 125cc mini bikes aren’t “wheel horsepower” commonly referred to as ‘WHP’ which is what a motorcycle actually puts to the ground. What manufacturers release majority of the time is what is considered “crank horsepower” rated at the flywheel. Through the drivetrain you will lose a % of horsepower & torque and that’s why seeing what a bike actually puts down to the ground via a dyno is important as some machines will lose more than others through their drivetrain.

Comparing dyno numbers between motorcycles can be a slippery slope though as you can and will have many variables. You have multiple styles of dyno machines that all have a variance in how they calculate the horsepower. You also have elevation changes thrown in the mix as well as temperature, humidity etc.
You can also have a variance in motorcycles as even if you take (2) identical motorcycle models and throw them on the same dyno on the exact same day you can run into different horsepower / torque ratings which is the nature of the beast when comparing an engine – no two are identical even when comparing the same model / engine. Another variable is mileage and how ‘broken in’ that engine is when comparing (2) separate bikes like this Grom vs Z125 dyno comparison. It’s been proven time and time again that engines once broken in can see a slight increase in horsepower & torque once the engine loosens up. Thankfully… This comparison doesn’t have to add in for that variable though as both bikes were thrown on the dyno with 5 miles on the odometer.
