Thanks to the California Environmental Protection Agency Air Resources Board we have an early sneak peek at what Honda is rating the 2016 Pioneer 1000 & Pioneer 1000-5 at horsepower wise. These HP numbers are in KW but as you can see below the calculate puts the horsepower rating on Honda’s baddest new UTV at 77 horsepower!

The next big question everyone is searching to find the answer for is what the top speed will be on the 2016 Pioneer 1000. At the moment it is all still speculation but when you compare the Pioneer 700 horsepower rating of 36.4 and its top speed at 45 MPH it will give us a ballpark on what the Pioneer 1000 / 1000-5 should do on the top-end. The Pioneer 1000 inevitably weighs more than the 700 but it can’t weigh twice as much so theoretically since they are more than doubling the horsepower it should be pretty peppy on the performance side of things. If I was a betting man I’d say it will be speed-limited somewhere around the 60-65 MPH mark from the factory. That’s where the fun part begins though with all of our aftermarket companies as they attack the Pioneer 1000. Once these companies get their hands on the 2016 Pioneer 1000 it’ll be interesting to see what kind of performance parts they pump out.

Pair up the 77 horsepower in the Pioneer 1000 with a 6-speed DCT transmission and I don’t think many will be unhappy with how fast this SxS will accelerate. Honda has been able to do wonders with gearing in their automotive lineup. Example being a Civic Si with only 200 horsepower, it can accelerate quicker than a lot of cars with similar weight and horsepower numbers. The gearing plays a big role in how “fast” a machine can feel.

Aside from all of the horsepower and performance talk about the Pioneer 1000 / 1000-5 since technically it’s not being built by Honda as a “sport SxS“. When you add in the usefulness of these two new SxS models and using them as a true utility machine and work-horse it’s going to be one difficult UTV / Side by Side to beat for 2016…

Anyone else hoping Honda de-tuned this engine enough to where they can at a later date release a Sport SxS 1000 with over 100 horsepower? I’m voting for a new version of the old school Honda Pilot / Odyssey single seater SxS / UTV but with a 1000 cc engine pushing 100+ horsepower haha. That would be one crazy machine! Polaris has a hit on their hands with the new ACE that is similar to what Honda did back in the 1980’s. It’d be nice to see Honda release a model for each segment of the market and clean house. In the meantime though I’m happy to see Honda getting as aggressive as they are in the SxS market. Reminds me of an old ad slogan from Honda “Follow the Leader”…
