It’s that time of the year again… Honda has release their entire 2018 ATV model lineup and now it’s time to go through all of them and break down their differences as well as explain how to read all of the model ID codes for each of them etc. If you haven’t already checked out the 2018 model lineup announcement I posted a little while back, you can check it out by Clicking Here and that’s where you find: prices, colors, release dates etc on all 2018 ATV models.

One of the questions I get asked the most is “What does TRX500FA7J mean?” or “What do all of those letters and numbers mean?” etc. Honda does make it pretty confusing when it comes to breaking down all of the different models and their differences so every year I go through all of them and do a post like this. I also go through each of the individual models and break them down like 2018 Rubicon VS Foreman differences, 2018 Foreman model differences, 2018 Rancher model differences etc.

Once you learn how to break the coding down it is very simple. Every letter / number helps determine what features that model has whether it be ES, DCT, EPS, IRS and so on.  The most important part is having a key to go off of that helps you with what an “F” may mean or a “7” etc.

  • TRX – Generic prefix for all Honda ATV Sport / Utility 2WD & 4WD models
  • 90 – 90 cc engine
  • 250 – 250 cc engine
  • 400 – 400 cc engine
  • 420 – 420 cc engine
  • 450 – 450 cc engine
  • 500 – 500 cc engine
  • 680 – 680 cc engine
  • T – Two Wheel Drive
  • F – Four Wheel Drive
  • M – Manual Shift
  • E – Electric Shift – Automatic
  • 1 – No Power Steering / EPS
  • 2 – Power Steering / EPS
  • 5 – IRS / NO Power Steering (EPS)
  • 6 – IRS / Power Steering (EPS)
  • D – Deluxe
  • J – 2018 Model Year
  • DCT – Dual Clutch Transmission (Automatic Transmission with Electric Shift option option to manually change gears via the ESP)
  • AT – Automatic (Automatic Transmission with Electric Shift option to manually change gears via the ESP)
  • EPS – Electric Power Steering
  • ESP – Electric Shift Position ( Only used on DCT ATV models | The Electric Shift Position button you’ll find on the right side handlebar of DCT models where you flip from “Auto” to “ESP” so you can manually change the gears by clicking the “UP” or “DOWN” button)
  • ES – Electric Shift
  • IRS – Independent Rear Suspension
  • FourTrax – Honda uses this as a generic model name for all of their utility ATV models in the lineup. Some confuse FourTrax as a certain model from Honda or that it means 4×4 but that is not the case as even 2×4 models use FourTrax.

Model EXAMPLE:

Now lets put what we learned above in the key to use… What is a TRX420FM1J? It is a 420 cc model Rancher ATV that is Four-wheel drive and Manual shift – 2018 year model. TRX = ATV / 420 = 420cc / F = Four wheel drive / M = Manual shift / J = 2018.

TRX is what Honda uses to classify their ATV models whether it be a Sport model like the TRX450R / TRX450ER / TRX400X / TRX250X / TXR90X etc or a Utility model like the TRX250 Recon, TRX420 Rancher, TRX500 Foreman / TRX500 Rubicon and TRX680 Rincon. The main difference between the Sport and Utility models though is the code on the Sport models is the only model name it receives. Whereas the Utility models have the details in their model name like TRX500FE1H and then the name Foreman which most people associate with the model instead of calling it a TRX500FA6H as it doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue very well like Foreman 500 does.

2018 Sport ATV Model ID / Names Explained:

2018 Honda TRX250X Sport ATV & 2018 Honda TRX90X Kids ATV

I will not be covering the 2018 Sport ATV Model Lineup extensively below and explaining what their model ID’s mean as they are pretty self-explanatory and there’s only (2) models for 2018 in the model lineup. For example: TRX90X = 90cc engine. TRX250X = 250xx engine. The X at the end of the model ID designates that it is a Sport Model ATV. The TRX at the beginning of the model ID designates that it is an ATV, all of Honda’s ATV models have a model ID that starts with TRX.

2018 Honda Foreman 500 4×4 ATV Model Options. The Foreman model lineup shrunk a little bit last year as Honda did discontinue a few models. The Manual Shift + EPS and Electric Shift models will not be returning for yet another year, in 2018. Below will break down their codes and model differences:

  • 1. EXPLAINED — The TRX = ATV. The 500 in the model “TRX500” = engine size is 500 cc. Then the “F” after the engine size = Four Wheel Drive. The “M” stands for Manual Shift. The “1” means no Power Steering / EPS. The “J” stands for 2018.

2018 Rubicon 500 ATV Models:

2018 Honda Rubicon 500 4×4 ATV Model Options. Honda did shrink down the Rubicon model lineup going into last year just like they did with the Rancher and Foreman to better simplify the model lineup and your available options etc. For 2018, the Rubicon 500 is no longer available with the Manual Shift (unless you get EPS) and then they have also discontinued the Rubicon Deluxe EPS (manual shift). This is where it can get confusing as Honda throws the Foreman name in with the Rubicon. Technically it is called a “Foreman Rubicon”. Typically I leave the Foreman name out of the equation when speaking about the Rubicon as it just confuses people and they are two completely different models – only sharing the engine. The Rubicon model lineup for 2017 gives you a few more options to choose from than the standard Foreman. You can get a Manual Shift or DCT (Automatic) with the option of using the ES module so technically on the DCT model you have (2) ways to go through the gears and you also get the added low gear too. Below will break down their codes and model differences:

  • 3. EXPLAINED — Everything is the same as Option (2) except for the fact this adds the Deluxe package to the Rubicon. With the Deluxe version of the 2017 Rubicon you also get Red Painted Suspension as well as Aluminum Wheels plus the 1st ever painted plastic on a Honda ATV. On the 2018 Rubicon Deluxe, you also have an option of going with the Phantom Camo plastics which is something they didn’t offer on the 2015 – 2016 Deluxe Rubicon models.

Not every website will include the specific model code online as they will use the generic code more often than not. Similar to finding a model specified as TRX500FM. Technically it’s not giving you all of the detailed and important model info.
